7 people arrested for running meth ring in Georgia

On Feb. 9, federal agents took seven people into custody for allegedly running a drug ring in Georgia. The arrests were made in the Atlanta metropolitan area.

Media reports indicate that Drug Enforcement Administration agents executed multiple search warrants at properties in Milton and Ellenwood. During the ensuing searches, they reportedly uncovered two methamphetamine manufacturing labs and several hundred pounds of meth in liquid and crystal forms. The seized drugs have an estimated street value exceeding $1.5 million.

A DEA agent said that meth labs are vulnerable to explosions because of the chemicals used to manufacture the drug. As a result, crews wore safety gear as they cleared the labs and removed the meth stockpiles over a number of hours. Neighbors of one of the labs told media outlets that they thought the property was a horse ranch. Authorities have not yet announced the specific charges the defendants, who were described as Mexican nationals, are facing.

Drug charges often carry harsh penalties in Georgia. For example, individuals convicted of manufacturing methamphetamine could be sentenced to up to 25 years in prison and fined $1 million. After they are released from prison, they are left with a permanent criminal record, which could inhibit future employment opportunities. However, every defendant is innocent until proven guilty and has the right to retain the services of a criminal defense attorney. The attorney could protect a defendant's rights throughout the legal process and work to develop a strong defense against the charges, which could cause the case to be dropped. If that is not possible, the attorney could still negotiate a plea deal that significantly reduces the charges, which could help the defendant obtain a lighter sentence.
