Man charged with murder in woman's death

A Georgia man has been taken into custody in connection with the murder of a 55-year-old woman. On Jan. 25, someone phoned the Douglas County Sheriff's Office at around 7 a.m. with a report that a body was in the grass by a road.

After investigators sent the woman's body to the Georgia Bureau of Investigations forensic laboratory, the state medical examiner determined that the death had been a homicide. Investigators say that she appeared to have been strangled and that her murder occurred at a different location from where she was found.

Initially, investigators released little information. They said that while they focused on the man early in the case, they were concerned that he would flee or destroy evidence. The man was found driving the woman's car on Feb. 7. On Feb. 24, he was charged with motor vehicle theft and murder. He was denied bond.

People who are facing violent crime charges may want to consult an attorney to discuss their options. These may vary depending on the specifics of the case. In some cases, the main aim might be to get a reduced sentence while in other cases a person might plead not guilty. In some circumstances, a person might argue that a death was accidental or in self-defense. In court, the defense might bring in experts who interpret forensic evidence differently from the prosecution or might even cast doubt on how the evidence was collected and handled. Another option is to negotiate an agreement with the prosecution that would provide for a plea of guilty to a lesser charge in exchange for a lesser penalty.
